What Requirements Do Truck Drivers Need to Have?

Driving a commercial truck is no easy job or task, especially when compared to driving a regular-sized car. That’s one of the main reasons why truck drivers must undergo certain training and certifications before they are qualified to get behind the wheel.

Obtain a CDL

The first step is applying for any obtaining a commercial driver’s license. There are a few basic requirements for this step that vary by state. Here are the requirements for applicants in the state of Georgia:

  1. Be at least 18 years old. Applicants between the ages of 18 and 21 may obtain a “Georgia Only” intrastate license; those 21 or older can obtain a full interstate license

  2. Possess a valid regular Georgia Driver's License. To obtain a CDL in Georgia, an applicant must already possess a regular Driver’s License within the state and your driving privileges must not be suspected or revoked.

  3. Take and pass the required exams and tests. This includes a vision exam, written knowledge exams, road skills tests, and any other applicable endorsements exams.

Attend a Truck Driving School

Before obtaining your CDL, you must go to a certified truck driving school. Most of these programs require drivers to have a clean driving record and a solid work history to be accepted.

Pass a Drug & Alcohol Test & Undergo a Physical

Prospective truck drivers must pass a drug and alcohol test and undergo a physical by an approved doctor before receiving their CDL.

Driver Error and Truck Accidents

While all truck drivers must meet the above requirements, truck driver error remains a leading cause of truck accidents across the country. Some of the most common ways that truck driver negligence leads to accidents include:

  • Driver fatigue

  • Drug and alcohol use

  • Speeding

  • Tailgating

  • Distracted driving

  • Failing to check blind spots
