What Does EXOGEN Gel Do?
EXOGEN Gel is meant to be used with an in-home ultrasound system to stimulate healing within bones with minor or moderate fractures. Patients are often instructed to apply the gel on the skin nearest the bone fracture at least once a day. The ultrasound system is then used for 20 minutes at least. Some patients are instructed to use the EXOGEN Ultrasound Bone Healing System more often, though, which could have inadvertently put them at a higher risk of bone infection due to a contaminated batch of gel.
Why Can EXOGEN Gel Be Dangerous?
Not all batches of EXOGEN Gel are dangerous. The company has identified only a limited number of lots that were contaminated with an undisclosed microbial substance. When used as normal and in typical circumstances, EXOGEN Gel is safe to use as instructed. However, a contaminated batch is capable of transmitting the microbial substances through the skin via absorption, where it can infect the vulnerable bone as it attempts to heal a fracture.
Bone infection symptoms can include:
- Severe pain in the affected area
- Swelling, redness, and unusual warmth
- Fever, chills, or excess sweat
- Open wound accompanied by pus
In severe cases or when a bone infection goes untreated, it can cause necrosis in the bone and the surrounding tissue. Necrosis can trigger a number of other dangerous symptoms and consequences, including amputation of the dead bones and tissues. Advanced necrosis, especially when it originates in a bone, can cause high blood toxicity and eventual death. Please see a medical provider immediately if you are suffering from possible bone infection symptoms.
Should You Keep Your EXOGEN Gel?
Yes, you should keep your EXOGEN Gel bottle if it has been identified as a contaminated batch. Do not use the contaminated product under any circumstance without first discussing it with your doctor. While the bottle is not being used, store it in a safe and secure location that is out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets. Consider keeping it in an airtight plastic bag.
You do not want to throw the bottle away or send it back to Bioventus because that will be discarding the best piece of evidence for your claim. Please allow our attorneys to carefully examine and document the contaminated bottle before disposal. In case the medical supply company tries to argue that you never used a contaminated product, we can quickly counteract that argument with our documented evidence.
